Location: Environmentally Integrated Dairy Management Research
Project Number: 5090-12630-006-004-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Jul 1, 2025
End Date: Jun 30, 2028
Objective:
Support collaborative research between the Cooperator and PI. The proposed research directly supports the Environmentally Integrated Dairy Management Research Unit by furthering nascent technology for manure management and resource recovery.
Approach:
The proposed cooperative research will leverage the Cooperator's experience with reactor design for bioelectrochemical & membrane-based nutrient recovery, as well as the ARS PI's expertise with pathogen inactivation studies and microbial community analysis. The project will evaluate pathogen reduction within bioelectrochemical systems for nutrient recovery from livestock manure. Pathogen reduction will be evaluated during anaerobic digestion in the bio-anode, as well as by electrochemically generated disinfectants (e.g., free chlorine, hydrogen peroxide) in the cathode. The scope of the cooperative research will also include recovery of dischargeable water and value-added fertilizer products from the waste stream of the reactor.
